How Does Online Running Coaching Work?

All coaching plans are delivered through the Final Surge platform, which syncs with your Garmin, Apple Watch, or other smartwatch so you can track workouts in real time. Every week, Kathy writes a personalized training plan tailored specifically to your goals, current fitness, and lifestyle.

Plans are never cookie-cutter. If you have a tough week, a race on the calendar, or just need an adjustment, Kathy is there to adapt your training. Whether you're training for a track event, a local 5K, half-marathon, marathon or longer, her remote coaching fits around your life wherever you are in the world. Training is always timed for your goals and plans.

Training specifically for 26.2? See the dedicated marathon coaching page for details on long-run progression, tapering, and race-day pacing. Racing 13.1 instead? See half marathon coaching.

Frequently Asked Questions

How It Works

Yes, and Kathy's roster of athletes is proof, since most of them have never trained with her in person. Every plan runs through Final Surge, which syncs automatically with Garmin, Apple Watch, Wahoo, and most major devices, so Kathy sees every workout you complete in real time: splits, heart rate, pace, and effort. Combined with regular communication, she gets the same picture a track-side coach would, often a clearer one, because the data doesn't lie. How much of that communication is live depends on your plan: Bronze runs on unlimited email, Silver adds a weekly call, and Gold adds up to 20 minutes of daily video or phone contact. Athletes coached entirely online under this system have gone on to national team selections, Olympic Trials qualifying times, and major marathon PRs, so remote coaching hasn't been the limiting factor.

Apps generate plans from algorithms. They don't know that you had a brutal week at work, that your left knee has been niggling, or that your goal race moved by three weeks. Kathy does, because you tell her, and she adapts. That ongoing, two-way relationship is what separates coached athletes from self-trained ones. Beyond the responsiveness, there's simply no app built on 28 years of elite coaching experience, two Olympics, and the knowledge that comes from guiding athletes to national team selections and Olympic Trials qualifiers. Apps are a useful tool. A coach who has been there changes your trajectory.

All plans are delivered through Final Surge, a free-to-use training platform with apps for iOS and Android. It syncs with Garmin, Apple Watch, Wahoo, and most major devices, so your workouts upload automatically. Kathy sets up your account when you start, no technical hassle.

Flexibility & Time

Life happens, and Kathy builds that into your plan. If you have a bad week, travel, get sick, or just need to back off, drop her an email and she'll adjust your training accordingly. Plans are never rigid. The goal is consistency over months, not perfection in any single week. The same goes for bigger disruptions like an injury or pregnancy. You and Kathy adjust the plan together instead of rushing you back to where you left off.

That depends entirely on your goals and current fitness, and Kathy will design around your actual availability. Beginners might start at 3–4 hours per week. Competitive athletes training for a marathon might be at 8–12 hours. There's no minimum. Kathy builds the plan around your life, not the other way round.

Who I Coach

Both. Kathy has coached complete beginners through to their first marathon, as well as elite athletes competing for Team USA and the Olympic Trials. The coaching approach changes. The commitment to your success doesn't. Every athlete on her roster gets personalized attention regardless of pace or experience level.

Yes. The same principles that build a strong marathoner, including smart periodization, load management, and adjusting based on how your body actually responds, carry over to 50Ks, 100-milers, and technical trail terrain. Ali Hummelberg came to Kathy already running trail marathons and went on to a 55K, a 50-miler, and 2nd place at the Leadville 100. If you're training for an ultra or a trail race, mention it on your free consultation call and Kathy will build the plan around it.

Kathy coaches the run: pacing, run-specific strength, and workouts like bricks and running off the bike. Sam Teller worked with Kathy through his progression from amateur to professional triathlete. If you're balancing swim and bike training with another coach or program, Kathy builds the run portion of your plan around it.

Fueling comes up naturally in coaching. Race-day nutrition, fueling for long runs, and general eating-for-training guidance are part of the conversation. Kathy isn't a certified dietitian or sports nutritionist, so for anything more specific, like medical conditions or a detailed meal plan, she'll point you to someone qualified rather than guess.

Yes, I offer coaching for companies training a team toward a shared race goal: a corporate 5K or 10K, a charity run, or a company running challenge. Every team has a different mix of abilities and goals, so we'll discuss the right approach for your group before building the program. Delivered remotely or in person, with pricing custom-quoted based on team size and no fixed minimum. Programs run as long or as short as your team needs.

Plans & Pricing

Bronze is a great starting point: you get a fully personalized weekly plan and unlimited email support. Silver adds a weekly call with Kathy for deeper feedback and relationship-building. Gold is for athletes who want maximum access and near-daily input. If you're unsure, just get in touch and Kathy will recommend the right fit for your goals and schedule.

For most runners chasing a real goal, whether that's a Boston Qualifier, a first marathon, or simply staying healthy through a full training block, yes. A coach catches overtraining before it becomes an injury, adjusts your plan around real life instead of a rigid template, and brings pattern recognition built from 28 years of coaching and two Olympic Games. Kathy holds USATF Level 3 and IAAF Level 5 certification, the highest levels available in the sport, and has taken beginners to their first marathon and elite athletes to Olympic Trials qualifying times using the same individualized approach. Athletes on her roster have taken over 6 minutes off a marathon PR while racing internationally for Team USA, and posted a 20-plus-minute cumulative marathon PR drop in their first year of coaching. The value compounds over a training cycle, not a single week.

Kathy's plans range from $155 USD/month (Bronze) to $310 USD/month (Gold). Bronze includes a fully personalized weekly training plan, an initial planning call, and unlimited email support, and runs $155 for 1 month, $415 for 3 months, or $725 for 6 months. Silver adds a weekly video or phone call with Kathy for $180, $490, or $850 over the same terms. Gold adds up to 20 minutes of video or phone contact daily, for $310, $825, or $1,450. Committing to 3 or 6 months lowers the effective monthly rate compared to paying month to month, and elite athletes and students may qualify for additional discounts. There's no long-term contract beyond the billing period you choose, and every plan starts with a free 15-minute call so you can talk through your goals before deciding which tier fits.
